History of Father's Day

Father’s Day is a special occasion celebrated to honor and appreciate fathers and father figures all around the world. While the exact origins of Father’s Day are somewhat debated, the tradition can be traced back to the early 20th century in the United States.

One popular story behind the creation of Father’s Day involves a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington. Inspired by the newly established Mother’s Day, Sonora wanted to create a day to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised Sonora and her siblings after their mother passed away. Sonora’s father had shown immense love and dedication in raising his children, and she felt it was important to recognize his efforts.

In 1910, Sonora approached local religious leaders and government officials in Spokane to establish a day to honor fathers. Initially celebrated on June 19th, which was her father’s birthday, Father’s Day quickly gained popularity in the following years. However, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in the United States when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries around the world, although the date may vary in some regions. It is a day to express love and gratitude to fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and other paternal figures for their guidance, support, and unconditional love. From heartfelt cards and thoughtful gifts to spending quality time together, Father’s Day is an opportunity to show appreciation for the important role fathers play in our lives.

Happy Father’s Day to all Dads and Father figures.
